Kibble still dominates, but raw feeding is gaining ground. This pillar page compares the two across 10 objective criteria — macros, additives, cost, convenience — then closes with a decision guide by profile.
Standard industrial kibble (not super-premium) vs a balanced BARF ration. Figures are indicative and vary with brand and formulation.
| Criterion | BARF | Kibble |
|---|---|---|
| Animal protein | ~70-80% (muscle, organs) | Variable (20-40%, incl. plant) |
| Moisture | 65-75% | 8-10% |
| Grains & carbs | Very low (0-10%) | 30-50% |
| Additives & preservatives | None | Common (BHA, BHT, binders) |
| Protein digestibility | 85-95% (raw, native) | 70-85% (high-temp cooking) |
| Monthly cost (20 kg dog) | 40-90 EUR | 25-80 EUR |
| Daily prep | 5-10 min/day | < 1 min |
| Storage | Freezer required | Dry pantry |
| Travel | More complex | Very easy |
| Dental health | Excellent (bone chewing) | Variable (format-dependent) |
| Raw bacterial risk | Real without hygiene | Near zero |
| Long-term balance | Depends on variety | Standardized (AAFCO/FEDIAF) |

No universal answer. The best diet is the one you can sustain every day.
Busy owner, frequent travel
Recommended: Kibble
If BARF consistency is hard to maintain (travel, unpredictable schedule), a super-premium kibble beats poorly executed raw.
Tight budget, small dog
Recommended: Kibble
On small dogs (<10 kg), premium kibble stays very competitive. BARF becomes interesting above that, when bulk buying absorbs the price gap.
Dog with allergies or digestive issues
Recommended: BARF
BARF lets you remove grains, preservatives and additives and control the protein source (mono-protein during an elimination phase).
Ethical and freshness-first approach
Recommended: BARF
Direct butcher sourcing, traceability, no meal-based ingredients. BARF fits a short-chain consumption pattern.
Well-balanced BARF brings more moisture, fewer additives and higher protein digestibility. But an unbalanced BARF (poor Ca:P ratio, EPA+DHA deficiency) will underperform a properly formulated premium kibble. Execution rigor matters as much as the method.
Not recommended. Digestion times differ (raw: 4-6 h, kibble: 8-12 h). If you combine, space meals by at least 6 hours. Most vets advise picking a single method.
Yes — AAFCO or FEDIAF certified kibble hits nutritional minimums. But 'balanced' is not 'optimal': macros are often met with cheap ingredients (plant meals, by-products).
Not necessarily. For a 20 kg dog, BARF runs 40-90 EUR/month depending on proteins and sourcing (wholesaler, butcher, discount). Premium kibble often lands in the same range.
Respect the cold chain (-18°C in freezer), thaw in the fridge, dedicated prep surface, hand and bowl washing. Mandatory pork freezing (≥3 weeks at -20°C).
